Program Overview
The Crowder College Surgical Technology Program is offered at our Joplin Instructional Center, the Joplin Advanced Training and Workforce Center (ATWC). This program is a total of two years, with general education courses required to be completed before being accepted and starting the program. Program courses take one year and start every Fall semester in August. The program is designed to give students the skills to be certified Surgical Technologists.
Currently, courses are held Tuesday through Friday. Courses include both lecture and skills lab components, as well as clinical rotations at regional healthcare partners. The schedule each week varies based on the term and any scheduled clinical rotations. Courses are typically between 9 and 4, with a break for lunch. Clinicals are typically 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, but can vary. Schedules are subject to change.
The program is a total of 63 credit hours, with 36 credit hours in program courses. Students that complete all coursework will sit for the national NBSTSA exam. Applications are accepted, typically starting in March through August.
Mission Statement
The mission of this program is “To prepare, at the minimum, entry level Surgical Technologist who are competent in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective learning domains to enter the profession”.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon Completion of the Surgical Technology AAS Degree:
1. Graduates shall be able to complete of a minimum of 120 surgical cases in the clinical experience, with 30 general and 90 specialty cases required, with a result of 100% accuracy.
2. Graduates shall be able to demonstrate understanding of aseptic techniques as evidenced from the required skills check list with 100% accuracy.
3. Graduates shall be able to demonstrate comprehension of the ARC education standards, with successful completion of NBSTSA exam, producing results with a minimum of 70% accuracy.
4. Graduates shall be able to demonstrate medical terminology skills by applying them to define surgical procedures with completion of the principles and practice tests, producing results with a minimum of 70% accuracy.
5. Graduates shall be able to proficiently articulate the importance of civic engagement to build a professional dialogue with the perioperative team demonstrated with completion of the principles and practice tests, producing results with a minimum of 70% accuracy.
