The purpose of the Crowder College Nursing program is to prepare graduates who can demonstrate entry-level competencies as registered nurses, to provide a foundation for continued learning, and to provide a multiple-entry program where licensed practical nurses can enter with advanced standing or students may enter with no previous nursing education. The program is approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing and is accredited through the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Graduation from the nursing program does not guarantee eligibility to write the licensure exam. Eligibility is determined on an individual basis by the Missouri State Board of Nursing based on the Missouri Nursing Practice Act section 335.066 (1-14) or as recognized by the state in which the graduate desires to license. The nursing faculty strongly believes that the learner must be an active participant in the educational process.

Negative drug screens are a requirement for the nursing program and to be eligible for employment at most healthcare institutions. Criminal backgrounds are looked at on a case-by-case basis in the state of Missouri.

A wide variety of instructional methods are utilized in the process-oriented nursing curriculum. Registered nurses function as an integral part of the healthcare team in many different roles. They are responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care as well as for the supervision of other healthcare workers. Licensed practical nurses are given credit for first-year nursing classes and may enter the program at Level II. LPNs entering with advanced standing must have a valid license to practice, be IV certified, and must have completed at least Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Psychology or Sociology, and Microbiology for Health before beginning the second level nursing sequence. Students will be enrolled in the LPN to RN Role Transition course once accepted into the nursing program.

Becoming a Registered Nurse

What is a registered Nurse (“RN”)? A Registered Nurse is a professional nurse who is compensated for performing acts requiring substantial specialized education, judgment, and skill. These acts are based on knowledge and application of principles derived from biological, physical, social, and nursing sciences. RNs typically work in a variety of healthcare-related fields, including surgery, intensive care, pediatrics, obstetrics, home health, public health, school nursing, and so on. Nursing activities include teaching health promotion and illness prevention, providing care and counseling to the ill, administering medications and treatments, and the coordination of health care providers and procedures. Students must successfully pass the NCLEX-RN Exam.
