Crowder Quill announces winners 

Neosho, MO – The Crowder Quill literary-art magazine contest of Crowder College has announced the winners of the annual contest.

For the 2020 contest and 40^th annual anniversary, 1257 entries were received, which is a record number of participants.  Winning entrants receive a certificate and are published in the magazine; this year, 106 awards were presented.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended no public gatherings, so there was not a public awards ceremony this year. Awards and magazines were mailed to winners. Magazines will be made available to the communities and high schools surrounding Crowder College as well as its campuses in Neosho, Pineville, Cassville, Joplin, and Webb City.

Art and literary submissions are accepted at CrowderQuill.com from May 1 to Feb. 1 each year. Categories are fiction, nonfiction, poetry, 2D art, 3D art, digital art, color photography, and black and white photography.

Contest divisions are high school, Crowder College students, and community members. High school gold winners in each division receive a $500 scholarship, which is funded by the art and communication departments.

The magazine was dedicated this year to healthcare professionals and frontline workers of Covid-19 as well as to Terry Ray Clarkson, Crowder College employee and supporter of the Quill, who passed away during the pandemic.

2020 staff are as follows: Jaime Bratton, Neosho; Bretton Cole, Neosho; Caleb Curtis, Anderson; Korby Fenske, Clever; Jacob Hall, Stockton; JT Overturf, Archie; Glory Reitz, Neosho; and Latonia Bailey, staff adviser.

Original founding staff members were as follows: Cheryl Ball, Patti Bowman, James Paul (JP) Dickey, Sally Geeding, Sandy Jordan, Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy, Wesley Watkins, and Dan Richard, adviser.

Begun in 1980, the Crowder Quill is published annually by the Magazine Production class at Crowder College. The mission statement is “to encourage and showcase the creative abilities of local writers, artists, and photographers as well as provide a cultural and link between Crowder College and our surrounding communities.”
